We humans are so unrealistic when it comes to our expectations of our pets (and other things, I’m sure!)

We're always interested in hearing about news in our community. Let us know what's going on!

What I love most about my pets is their ability to make me laugh.  Sometimes with them, but often at them and their zany antics.  I’ll share a few of my animals’ funniest moments as I think we can all use a good chuckle!

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “Breeding Like a Rabbit.”  Have you ever wondered why rabbits, in particular, were singled out for that label?

Imagine that you just got a new puppy – adorable and playful.

Happy New Year!!  First thing I want to do this year is thank the Community Voice for giving me this space each week to connect with you.

Thought I would close 2022 with the most heartwarming story that I heard this year.  You might have heard about it too since it’s gone viral but just in case you missed it, here it is.

We have one week left of our generous December adoption special, “Name Your Own Adoption Fee,” and we want to really highlight some of the animals that have been waiting so patiently for their turn to have their dreams come true - a home for the holidays!

Steven Johnstone, Fernanda Mendoza Mondragon, Adam Barzed, Angelina Flyer, Juliana Cardenas, Natali Nasser, Nemani Bolaqace, grade 9, Chantal Zuniga, Lamar Husary, Severin Read, Gabriella Greco, Caroline Nekola, Daniel Eddlemon, Kendall Newton, Irlanda Lino Rodriguez, Bianca Nelson, Uma Rosa…

The jolliest time of the year can quickly turn tragic when an accident or injury happens to someone we love (human or pet).

Do you allow your cat(s) to roam outdoors?  There are so many reasons why this is dangerous and quickly moving up to the top of the list is attacks by wildlife.

A Home for the Holidays.  What a wonderful thought.  For us it might mean we’re staying home; or we’re going back home for the holidays to be with family.  But to the animals in the shelter, it takes on a very literal meaning.

It feels a little like cheating to reuse a similar column year after year but this one is not only seasonal; it really needs to be said at least annually.

So along with the shortage of veterinarians, vet techs, shelter staff and employees in just about every business you could name, according to an article in the Press Democrat last week we have a shortage of groomers in our county.

Would your dog chase a cat if he had the opportunity?  Most dogs would.

You can tell that as a society we treat our dogs more and more like children.  We build playgrounds for children and dog parks for our fur-kids.  And not just big fenced in spaces, I’m talking parks with agility and play structures, digging pits and more to help keep our dogs entertained.  T…

How much would you pay if your pet was injured or ill?  If you quickly responded “whatever it costs” you either have not priced out veterinary care recently or are so wealthy that it just doesn’t matter.  For the rest of us, this question is a real struggle.

A recent headline in the Press Democrat declared “New York City may ban pet shops from selling guinea pigs.”  Not dogs (which is very controversial since so many pet shop dogs come from puppy mills), not cats (also a huge problem given their overpopulation in general), but guinea pigs of all…

For dogs that wear clothes year-round getting into a costume for Halloween is no big deal.  For the rest of our pets though, the thought of walking around with a cape or hat on is just plain frightening.

Have you ever heard the saying “dogs are people oriented and cats are place oriented?”  It tends to be true!

What do you know about microchips? What would you like to know?  I’m doing some research for a talk I’m giving called “demystifying microchips” and thought I’d use this article as a way to organize my information.  Yep, you are my test audience. Let me know what you think!

Don’t know if you noticed but a couple of weeks ago, we were breaking all records for high temperatures.  Rohnert Park hit temps of 108-110 degrees for several days in a row.  That’s toasty!  It seems strange to be writing about dealing with hot weather in the fall but that seems to be our n…

What difference can two weeks make?  Depends on what you are talking about, right?  If discussing how to tame down feral kittens, two weeks can be a game changer.

Are you one of those people who think that shelters only have mutts and problem dogs?  That is a common misconception.

Hunter was adopted last week and that’s all we talked about – “Did you hear? Hunter got adopted!” “I’m so happy to hear that Hunter was adopted!” “Can you believe it? Hunter was finally adopted!”  So who was Hunter, and why was this adoption so special?

As you know by now, I usually write about something going on in my world.  And what’s happening right now is that one of my dogs, Dobby, has an upset GI tract.

I’m sure most of you have heard by now about the rescue going on at the beagle breeding facility run by Envigo RMS in Cumberland, Virginia.  A seven-month uncover investigation by PETA won freedom for 4,000 beagles being bred and raised for medical experiments.  The decision by a federal jud…

We’ve just finished our three sessions of our Kidz ‘n Critters Summer Camp and our campers are eager to share with you some of what they learned here. Bet you can guess which speaker was their favorite!

Several animal shelters across America have been featured in the news recently, and not in a good way.

In a previous column I talked about proactive steps you can take to keep a reactive dog safe and manage his behavior.  How to put up extra safeguards in your yard, your house and on the dog himself.  Since so many bites happen to children, it’s important to teach them steps to take to stay s…

Is it the fireworks that has all the dogs riled up or the three-day holiday?  Whatever it is it seems like we’ve had a rash of biting dogs recently.

I feel so guilty!  One of my friends just chided me and said that poor Bella, my newest family addition, was suffering from “second child syndrome.”  I was shocked and asked what she meant by that.  Instead she asked me when I posted a notice that I adopted Dobby, my other dog?  Of course, I…
