Santa Rosa resident Jami Oakley is not your traditional baker, her scrumptious cupcakes aren’t meant for you, but for your best friend-your dog. Oakley’s late grandmother taught her to bake at a very young age. She recently found an old photo of herself at two years old happily sitting on her grandmother’s lap watching her bake. After spending 23 years in the insurance industry Oakley was ready to try a new occupation. Things started falling into place while Oakley pondered how to celebrate her beloved pug Sophie’s 13th birthday. To her dismay, Oakley couldn’t find any kind of healthy dog delicacy to present to Sophie on her special occasion. Instead of giving up, Oakley saw this as an opportunity to put her baking skills to the test to create the perfect canine cupcake. The results were met with great enthusiasm and with that Sophie’s Sweet Cakes was born. It’s a partnership as Sophie holds the title of CEO (Canine Executive Officer) and Quality Control Taste Tester for the business, her cute image plastered on each individual cupcake container.
Oakley’s canine confections are made from all natural, organic, human grade ingredients that contain no wheat, corn, soy, sugar, glucose corn syrup, additives, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. They are made for all dogs but are proving to be a great option for older dogs with dietary restrictions, picky eaters and dogs with dental limitations who can’t handle the hard dog treats currently available to pet lovers. Cupcake flavors currently include Banana, Carob and Peanut butter.
Sophie’s Sweet Cakes are already getting a lot of tails wagging. Each month, Oakley donates her cupcakes to local animal shelters, most recently the North Bay Animal Services. The cupcakes are currently available for purchase at Rivertown Feeds in Petaluma, Western Farm in Santa Rosa and Woodlands Pet Shop in San Francisco. Additional retail locations are being added throughout the Bay Area and can be found listed on Oakley’s website wwwsophiessweetcakes.com. “The pandemic has people spending more time with their pets so interest in the cupcakes has been great,” said Oakley. She is currently working on special holiday themed cupcakes.
