Round-up some Halloween fun with Sebastopol Wranglers

Looking for some Halloween fun this year? Look no further than the Halloween Play Day with the Sebastopol Wranglers. Who are the Sebastopol Wranglers you ask? Sebastopol Wranglers is a local  horse-riding club. The Wranglers sponsor equestrian events under prevailing horse show rules and guidelines.  For the good of the sport and community they emphasize and perpetuate good sportsmanship in shows and competitions. They also promote organized club rides and the improvement of riding skills. Sebastopol Wranglers host social activities and events for the pleasure of its members and guests.  The group also promotes trail riding for families and individuals in the Sebastopol area and throughout California.

That said, you could imagine there will be a lot of horsing around at the Play Day. This event will be an all day affair. There will be six events or classes for horses and riders to compete in, as well as six age divisions. In each age division the fastest time will win the class and the fastest combined time of all six events will win the trophy for high points. There will also be a reserve trophy for the second fastest combined time. Prizes and ribbons will abound for each age group and class.

Events will include pole bending. Where horse and rider slalom through 6-foot poles that are spaced approximately 21 feet apart. A flag race, in which the rider carries a flag to one end of the arena and plants it and retrieves another before returning to the starting line. Keyhole, a contest where a 4-foot by 10-foot keyhole shape is drawn on the ground made of flour.  Horse and rider enter the keyhole entrance and must turn around without stepping out of or scuffing the lines of the keyhole. Next will be the egg and spoon event, where the rider must navigate a horse through a course and return with the egg intact. The fifth event will be the obstacle course.  Here the horse and rider team will have to complete three challenges. A six-inch step over, a ring grab and a barrel turn. The barrel will have a bucket full of candy on top and each rider absolutely must grab a handful to complete the challenge successfully. The final event will be a standard cloverleaf barrel race. In this event three barrels are placed in the arena and the horse and rider carve their way through the barrels tracing the pattern of a cloverleaf.  Although not part of the points scoring, the last contest should be the best. The costume contest where both the horse and rider will transform into whatever wild creation the rider can coax out of the realm of possibility.

Sebastopol Wranglers Halloween Play Day is open to the public. The event will be held at the Sebastopol Wranglers Arena at 2412 Meier Road in Sebastopol. Gates open at 8 a.m. and the show will start at 9 a.m. The parking lot is large and has plenty of room for trucks and trailers. There will be a snack bar for food and drinks. Seating is available at the arena but you might want to bring a chair that you can find a place in the shade adjacent to the arena.  Costs for contest entry are $35 for members for the day and $45 for the day for non-members. Or $7 per event or class if a rider does not want to participate in every class. You can find out more about the event and Sebastopol Wranglers on line at or call 707-829-1699 for event specific information. If you plan on attending please wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines. “This will be a safe and fun event,” say organizers Dennis and Denise Babine. My hat is off to them for organizing a family friendly equestrian event this Halloween.
