Summer Classic tournament has taken place for many summers in Rohnert Park, and it was nice to finally see girls back on the field playing softball compared to last summer when there was no tournament due to COVID-19.
On Saturday of the tournament, the Rohnert Park Rebels U10 B team coached by Christy Martinez competed in a game vs. Phantom P.O.D at M park. The team made a thrilling comeback by scoring eleven runs in the bottom of the third inning.
The U10 B team was down 8-0 starting at the bottom of the third, and the girls were not giving up then. They picked up the momentum and went back to back scoring runs.
The rally started when Cambria Weerts was on first, and Lainey Miller got on from a ground ball and stole second base. Cambria Weerts then scored home when there was an overthrow from the Phantoms and followed was the rest of the runs.
In the comeback inning, Sam Butler, Kaylin Gerke, Hailey Turner, Halia Feeny, and Cambria Weerts all had smart decisions in the batter's box and were walked by the Phantom pitcher. Many players for the Rebels contributed to the runs by hitting solid hits with runners in scoring positions. Most of the bottom of the third inning consisted of bases loaded for the Rebels offensively.
Not only was the team able to step up on offense to win the game, but Jocelyn Martinez had a good day on the mound. She held the Phantoms at the end of the game and her defensive plays were impressive. In the top of the 4th, she covered a bunt, fielded a ground ball, and caught a fly ball at the mound. Defensively, Lainey Miller also had a few great plays at second base throughout the game, stopping hard ground balls and contributing to a double play.
The Rohnert Park Rebels 10U B team, coached by Christy Martinez, ended up winning against the Phantoms 11-10 on Saturday and moved on to win the championship game for the 10U B tournament bracket. The Rebels played the 10U Petaluma Steal Breeze in the championship and won 8-4.
Coach Martinez has been coaching softball for about six years and states that coaching these girls on the Rebels team this summer has been fun, exciting, amazing and consists of a great group of girls. The Rohnert Park Rebels 10U B team will continue onto their next tournament in Sonoma on July 23-25.
