For the second year in a row, The Salvation Army is holding school supply drives at more than 4,500 Walmart locations across the country. In the Bay Area media market, there are 13 Walmart stores participating. Due to COVID-19, the need is greater than ever before. It also means our campaign looks a little different this year.
Walmart shoppers can purchase school supplies online and in-store to help local families in need. At participating Walmart locations, The Salvation Army will place collection bins inside the store, but to maintain social distancing and to keep everyone as safe as possible, we will not have volunteers present.
This year, more families need our help. Students, teachers and parents are heading into an unprecedented school year due to COVID-19. Many have been out of work and now schools may begin the academic year with distanced learning, putting additional strain on families. Our goal is to relieve a little bit of the burden those families face and give them hope for a successful school year. All donations will stay in the community in which they are given.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, The Salvation Army has provided more than 65 million meals, 1.45 million nights of safe shelter and emotional and spiritual support to more than 778,000 people, in addition to the financial assistance and youth programs the organization provides in almost every ZIP code in America.
Walmart and The Salvation Army have collaborated for more than 30 years with a common mission: to meet needs in their local communities. Supporters like Walmart help The Salvation Army serve more than 23 million Americans each year through a range of social services to help them overcome poverty and economic hardships.
National campaign runs August 7-9, 2020, days may vary by location.
