Oh, how great it is to see football again! The Rancho Cotate Cougars kicked off the 2021 season in style with a 49-13 rout of the Casa Grande Gauchos behind 5 touchdowns from Quarterback Ryan Kane and smothering defense. Friday was the Cougars’ first game in over a year and a half, and it was the first time the fans in attendance got to see a number of players.
One of those players brought the pain, literally. Kane scored 3 rushing touchdowns inside the red zone and then went on a long 40 plus yard scramble late in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. He then lofted a beautiful touch pass to Jordan Broderick in the corner of the end zone to cap off his night.
Kane wasn’t the only Cougar player imposing his will. The defensive line, consisting of Max Uli, Garrett Ridley, Gino Mencarini, Kadin Skaggs and others smothered the Gauchos offense all night. The Cougars defense had 3 sacks, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), while the special teams blocked an extra point and had a 95-yard kick-off return for a touchdown.
Head Coach Gehrig Hotaling admitted the team was rusty after such a long layoff, but expects the Cougars to improve over the course of the next four weeks. The team’s next game is Friday at Petaluma High School with the game starting at 7 p.m.
