Superintendent Michael Watenpaugh in an email to parents outlined the next steps for the Cotati Rohnert Park Unified School District (CRPUSD) in moving to “trustee area” elections after consultation with legal counsel to obtain process guidance and advice. The first step, already completed, was to provide written notice to the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE). Watenpaugh informed them of the district’s intent to have this new election system in place for the November 2020 elections. At their request, he attended Sonoma County’s “Committee on School District Organization” meeting held last Monday, Jan. 6, to make a brief presentation concerning the district’s plans.
A key ingredient in expediting the process is obtaining a waiver from the State Board of Education. In order to obtain that waiver, the district has to comply with certain regulations and requirements. These include “seeking feedback and comments from community stakeholders including bargaining units, school site councils and advisory committees.” For this purpose, the following public meetings have been scheduled. All public meetings are scheduled to be held at the district office in the board room located at 7165 Burton Avenue in Rohnert Park at 6 p.m.
Prior to Creation of Map Options: Tuesday, Jan. 14th and Tuesday, Jan. 21st.
After Creation of Map Options: Tuesday, Feb. 18th, Thursday, Feb. 27th and Tuesday, Mar. 10th.
The vote on which map to adopt will follow the third public hearing March 10. The district is inviting parents and other community stakeholders to attend one or more of these public meetings to provide input. When the proposed maps are created, they will be posted on the district’s website at www.crpusd.org. If unable to attend a public meeting, input and feedback can be provided by sending comments to firstname.lastname@example.org by email. You can also call with input at (707) 792-4722. The school district will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
