Be a friend to a senior for the holidays

Are you looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities that can be done from home? Consider becoming a phone buddy to a senior who could use a regular friendly check-in. Many seniors in West County are reporting continued feelings of loneliness and lack of connection as the pandemic continues. Currently, there are more seniors requesting check-in phone calls than there are volunteers. You can change that!

One volunteer, Susan, recently called me to tell me their phone buddy just turned 98 and still enjoys going for daily walks and doing puzzles. Susan thanked us for starting the Phone Buddy program because it’s been “the best part of her week” being able to call to check on her buddy.

In any other year besides 2020 it seems; Susan would be able to join her 98-year-old phone buddy at the Senior Center’s annual holiday potluck. It’s been a festive annual holiday potluck that has brought joy to people in all walks of life. Over 60 people fill the senior center’s lunchroom and share their favorite holiday dishes with strangers and friends alike. Piano music fills the halls and the memory of the sound of laughter echoing in the halls is enough to bring tears to my eyes.

Rising COVID cases are making it impossible to even offer a walk-through meal service, but you can still give the gift of a phone call. Be the smile on a senior’s face. Give us a call to learn more, 707-829-2440 or email

And don’t forget to shop The Legacy’s Holiday Bazaar, a 5-day sale event for you to come get all of your new and gently used holiday items; from trees, to lights, to ornaments, menorahs, stockings, coffee mugs, gifts, wrapping paper and so much more.
