In 2011 the city adopted a Strategic Plan. Such plans are commonly used to make a clear statement about the vision, mission, and values of an organization, and to help set priorities. Each year we update our Strategic Plan to ensure it remains current and reflects changes in the community, economy, technology and other areas. Earlier this month the city council approved the latest update to the Strategic Plan.
Even with annual updates, there are some long-term aspects of the plan that remain stable over time. This includes our enduring vision of Rohnert Park as a thriving, family friendly community that is a safe, enjoyable place to live, work and play. This is what I work on every day, along with the rest of the entire city team.
To make our vision come to life, we adopt a set of projects to focus on each year. For 2019, these include:
Ensuring the successful development of the future downtown Rohnert Park, centered on the Station Avenue project.
Updating the city’s General Plan, which sets the long-term vision for the city in housing, transportation, economic development and recreation.
Working toward renewal of the city’s boundaries to limit future growth from encroaching on open spaces outside of the city’s limits.
Continuing to mitigate traffic challenges by improving our intersections and timing of streetlights.
Helping residents interested in taking a more active role in our community by establishing a Leadership Rohnert Park program to provide training on key issues and leadership skills.
Adding staff and revising the management structure of our Department of Public Safety to provide improved oversight and support for our officers.
Continuing to attract additional businesses – particularly shops and restaurants – to give our residents more choices.
Improving outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness and connecting them to services such as shelters, counseling and job placement.
Improving our communication with residents by making better use of social media, including Facebook, Nextdoor and Twitter.
The Strategic Plan has helped us achieve numerous successes in recent years, such as renovating and opening all of the restrooms in our parks, increasing the number of community events such as the recent “I Love Rohnert Park” celebration, hosting Town Hall meetings and improving our financial practices.
Strong organizations plan well with an eye on the big picture, always looking to the future while working day to day. I believe that our Strategic Plan does just that.
Spreckels Education Program presents Guys and Dolls Jr.
Guys and Dolls Jr., is an adaptation of the show considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy.
Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls Jr. is an oddball romantic comedy. Guys and Dolls Jr. takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually, everyone ends up right where they belong. Performances run from Feb. 22 – March 3, 2019. Tickets available at www.rpcity.org/tickets.
Town Hall meeting coming soon
Another great way to share your thoughts about Rohnert Park is to attend a Town Hall meeting. Our next one will be March 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Community Center. We generally hold these meetings twice per year because they have proven to be great ways for us to communicate with our residents. You will have the chance to ask questions and hear directly from the city council. I hope to see many fellow residents there.
Community Survey is coming to a close
Last year we completed a survey of our residents, where over 2,600 participated by sharing your opinions about the quality of city services and what you would like to see in our community. We’ve been using this input to help set our priorities.
To participate, please visit www.rpcity.org/survey prior to the surveys close date Thurs., Feb. 28, 2019. I look forward to sharing survey results in a future column.
