The Rohnert Park City Council at its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 12, recognized the Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety for the various fundraisers they have held over the past few months in support of the Special Olympics of Northern California this year.

The Special Olympics provides athletic opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, instilling the confidence they need to succeed in life.

The Special Olympics of Northern California is a small, grass-roots organization that opened its doors in 1995 and has been a powerful advocate for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The Dept. of Public Safety has been a dedicated supporter of this organization for many years. This year, Public Safety hosted two Tip-A-Cop events that were held at Chili’s on May 14 and at Applebee’s on June 5, which collectively raised $4,400 for the Special Olympics. Public Safety will also be hosting the annual Running with the Pack – 5K Run on Sunday, Sept. 21 in conjunction with the City’s Founders Day Parade and Festival (Sept. 20-21) with proceeds benefiting the Special Olympics.

“The City Council commends Public Safety for its fundraising efforts and dedication to supporting Special Olympics athletes” Councilwoman Gina Belforte said. “It’s great to see staff supporting such a great cause.”
