Publishing vet Brenda Knight to speak at Flamingo in SR

Twenty-two-year publishing veteran Brenda Knight will share insider tips on the publishing process when she appears on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 3-5 p.m. at the Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa.

From the outside, book publishing can seem quite mysterious, but from the inside it can be really quite simple, according to Knight.

Knight will attempt to teach authors how to sell themselves and their book idea, determine who they are really selling to, discuss the importance of “comp titles,” show how to craft the perfect proposal, and explain trend tracking.

Knight started at HarperCollins over two decades ago, where she fell in love with publishing. Now she is the publisher of Cleis Press, and founder and publisher of Viva Editions, an imprint of Cleis Press. Knight is also the author of “Women of the Beat Generation,” which won an American Book Award, and “The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal.”

A handout for the talk, “Insider Tips: The Art of the Book Deal, A Six Page Outline,” is available for download at the Redwood Writers home page at

Redwood Writers is the largest of 19 branches of the California Writers Club, founded in 1909.  Early members included Jack London, George Sterling, John Muir, Joaquin Miller and the first California poet laureate, Ina Coolbrith.  Its motto is “writers helping writers.”

The Flamingo is located at 2777 Fourth St. in Santa Rosa. Admission is $5 for members, $8 for non-members. This event is sponsored by Redwood Writers.
