Ground is breaking on the once empty Wilfred-Dowdell Specific Plan, as proven by an update at Rohnert Park City Hall at their council meeting Tuesday, July 22.

The tentative parcel map for the future Oxford Suite Hotel and McDonald’s fast food restaurant was presented by Development Services Director Marilyn Ponton and City Engineer Mary Grace Pawson and approved by city council with a 4-0 vote. Jake Mackenzie was absent.

“This is probably the next step in the development part of our Wilfred-Dowdell Plan,” commented City Manager Darrin Jenkins. “You may have noticed construction has started in that far corner there, so soon we will have construction going on both sides of the street.”

Jenkins was referring to the future site of Amy’s Kitchen, whose parcel of land is right across the street from the future Oxford Suite Hotel. Of the 4.58 acres, the city has retained 0.60 for street right-of-way purposes. The improvements approved on Tuesday included use for emergency vehicle access, public utilities, a sidewalk, parking and landscaping.

“I have to say I am excited to work with Oxford Suites,” said Mayor Joseph Callinan.

“We have been negotiating and working with them for many years, so I am pretty excited about that.”
