La Plaza Park in Cotati may have been the safest place to be last Saturday.

Sure, the Cotati Police Dept. was on hand to patrol the happenings at the Kids’ Day Parade and Festival, but that’s not the reason people felt an extra sense of security. Those in the park and along the parade route on Old Redwood Highway were protected by the likes of Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Batman, the Incredible Hulk and other superheroes defending truth, justice and the American way. There wasn’t a villain – Lex Luthor, the Joker, the Penguin or the Riddler – to be found.

The Kids Day celebration has been going on for 22 years and remains one of the most popular local events on the calendar. And with this year’s superheroes theme, you just knew there’d be an abundance of cuteness.

The organizers of this event must be commended because it’s not easy keeping dozens upon dozens of young children entertained for an extended period of time. And while milling about the park, the most pervasive sound was that of laughter from both children and adults.

For me, the most entertaining part of the day was the diaper derby, where kids who are too young to take their first steps must crawl across the finish line to win a $50 gift card. There were four young kids placed at starting line by their parents, who then walked about 10 yards away to the finish line.

The intent was for the kids to crawl to their parents. The only problem was when the race started, all four kids just stayed at the line with a bemused “Mommy, why are you leaving me here?” look on their faces. No matter how hard the parents tried to induce their children to crawl, not one of them budged. They eventually moved the finish line closer and closer to the children until one of them finally cross the finish line.

There weren’t quite as many entries in the parade as in years past, but those who were in the parade did not lack for creativity.

Superman riding a mini motorbike was pretty cool, as was seeing one of the girls dressed as Supergirl riding alongside Scooby Doo in the Mystery Machine.

Anyone with a sweet tooth would have been in high heaven because just about everyone entered in the parade, including members of the Cotati City Council, was tossing candy into the crowd.

Next year’s theme has yet to be determined, but it’ll be hard-pressed to top the superheroes.
