Bad to the Bone, Plastered Pig and Smokey Luv…with monikers such as these, one can only suspect they are top-flight barbecue cooks.

Well, they are, and they’ll be competing at the fourth annual Wine Country Big Q BBQ Festival and Competition on Saturday, July 12, from 1-5 p.m. at Sonoma Mountain Village (SOMO) in Rohnert Park. More than 45 barbecue teams and more than a dozen wineries from throughout the country will vie to see who rules the grill. They’ll be cooking chicken, beef, lamb, beans, sauce and bacon dessert. This day should be a carnivores delight.

More than $9,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs.

Whoever wins the grand champion honor will move on to compete at the Kansas City Royale and Jack Daniels Classic, two of the biggest barbecue competitions.

The Wine Country Big Q is one of only 400 competitions nationally sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which gives guests an opportunity to judge barbecue cooked low and slow to determine the People’s Choice Awards.

Additional challenges, exclusive to the Big Q festival, are: the Winery Big Beef Challenge, where wineries pair their wines with tri-tip; the Bold Bean Challenge; Bakin’ for Bacon dessert competition; and new this year the Get Sauced and tailgate competitions.

Live music will be provided by Jimi Hendrix cover band Purple Haze and Aqua Nett.

The competition is a benefit for the Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival.

Admission is $45 for adults, which includes a pound of barbecue and wine tasting.

Sonoma Mountain Village is located at 1300 Valley House Dr. in Rohnert Park off Petaluma Hill road.
