Sonoma County’s only national barbecue competition, the fourth annual Wine Country Big Q, will take place Saturday, July 12, from 1-5 p.m. at Sonoma Mountain Village (SOMO) in Rohnert Park.

With more than $9,000 in cash and prizes, pit masters from throughout the country are signing up to see who will rule the grill as the grand champion and move on to compete at the Kansas City Royale and Jack Daniels Classic, two of the “big daddies” of barbecue competitions.

The Wine Country Big Q is a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) nationally sanctioned barbecue competition and festival. The competition also has its own special twists added into the contest with the “Winery Big Beef Challenge” providing wineries an opportunity to pair their award-winning wines with barbeque; the “Bold Bean Challenge;” “Bakin’ for Bacon” dessert competition; the “Get Sauced Challenge, which is new this year; a “make it with Lagunitas” competition; and the Backyard Barbecue Tailgate competition.

The event promises to feature some of the most mouthwatering barbecue available this side of the Rocky Mountains.

Those in attendance can cast their vote for their favorite barbecue treasures. In addition to cash, teams will compete for a People's Choice Award and points to qualify for select national competitions.

Wine Country Big Q is a benefit for the Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival. Tickets are on sale now and space is limited. Adult admission is $45 for a pound of award-winning barbecue, wine tasting, live entertainment and giveaways.

Youth tickets are also available. SOMO is located at 1300 Valley House Drive in Rohnert Park off Petaluma Hill Road. Go to www.winecountrybigq.com or call (707) 523-3728 for more information.
