A Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety officer may have prevented a major traffic catastrophe by ramming a car off the road before it entered the freeway heading in the wrong direction.

The end result was a DUI arrest.

The action by the officer brought an end to a vehicle chase that began in Rohnert Park and ended in Cotati, according to a RPDPS report.

At a little after 9:30 p.m., an RPDPS officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle that seemingly was recklessly traveling on Rohnert Park Expressway near Rancho Verde Circle. The driver of the vehicle appeared to be ready to cooperate with the RPDPS as he pulled over and stopped at Rancho Verde Circle.

However, when the officer got out of his patrol car, the suspect fled eastbound in his vehicle on RP Expressway. A pursuit involving other officers ensued and went to Highway 101 and then out to Stony Point Road. The vehicle then headed east on Highway 116 back toward Cotati.

Officers ended the pursuit when they lost sight of the vehicle as it entered Cotati. After the chase ended, the suspect vehicle crashed into another vehicle.

Another officer located the vehicle at the interchange of Highways 101 and 116. The suspect vehicle then entered the northbound ramp of Highway 101 but was heading in the southbound direction.

The officer then rammed the vehicle off the road before he could get onto the freeway, effectively ending the chase. The unnamed driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail.
