Cougars rally to subdue Giants
Run in top of 9th seals playoff win

Heads-up base running on the part of Rancho Cotate’s Katie Rohrer coupled with multiple defensive lapses on the part of Redwood High was the telling factor in the Cougars’ first-round, nine-inning North Coast Section Div. II playoff victory on Tuesday, May 20, in Larkspur.

The Cougars scored the decisive run when Rohrer’s shot to center field was misplayed, allowing her to get to second base. The ball was then thrown in to the shortstop, who eventually tossed the ball into right field, which allowed Rohrer to come home with the winning run.

With the win, the Cougars (18-6-1 overall) advance to the second round to square off with the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 1 seed Alhambra and No. 16 seed San Lorenzo. The game will be played either today or Saturday.

If Alhambra wins, Rancho Cotate hits the road, but should San Lorenzo pull off the upset, the game will be in Rohnert Park.

The Cougars, who trailed 4-0 after three innings, used sheer power to score six runs in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Vickie Espinoza belted a two-run homer, and Rohrer delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a grand slam.

The Giants tied the game with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Freshman pitcher Brittney Scardina got the victory. She went the full nine innings, struck out six, walked three and allowed nine hits.
