Redwood Writers, 6th Street to co-host regional playwright festival May 15-25

A collaboration between the Redwood Writers and 6th Street Playhouse is bringing the works of regional playwrights to life on stage this month. “Passport to the Plays: A Short Play Festival” features six short plays selected through the Redwood Writers Play Contest for full production in the 6th Street Playhouse Studio, and four short plays chosen as “curtain raisers,” readings on stage prior to select Passport performances.

Once the six winning short plays were selected by a team of adjudicators, each playwright met with dramaturge Garret Jon Groenveld for a private consultation to discuss their play, including opportunities for rewriting or refining. Six directors were selected, and together they cast 10 actors to play 19 roles. Playwrights, directors, actors, designers and tech crew collaborate to make the transition from page to stage, with audiences helping complete the journey.

This theatrical event runs from May 15-25 in the 6th Street Studio in Santa Rosa. Audience members will have the chance to participate in a free post-show discussion with the playwrights following the final matinee. The festival also includes staged readings of plays by members of Playwrights Forum, a group of local playwrights who convene to share and develop new work. Groenveld, internationally produced playwright and founding writer of PlayGround, will present a playwright workshop on developing 10-minute plays. Wrapping up the festivities is a reading of Lauren Gunderson's full-length play “Silent Sky.”
