The Rohnert Park City Council approved a two-year extension for the Oxford Suites Hotel and McDonald’s Restaurant in the Village North section of Wilfred/Dowdell Specific Plan at its meeting Tuesday night.

The vote was 4-0, as Vice Mayor Amy Ahanotu was absent.

Village North is an already approved development plan consisting of 4.58 acres.

In the development, which should proceed soon, is a 163 room Oxford Suites Hotel building as well as a 3,400 square foot McDonald’s fast food restaurant.

The plan was approved by council in May 2012, but because of necessary yet lengthy permit authorizations, including approval by the California Department of Fish and Game and Wildlife Services, construction has not yet begun.

The report, presented by Technical Advisor Norman Weisbrod, noted that the project has “involved securing related permits from numerous agencies and is very time consuming.

“As you can see they’ve been working diligently, however they need this extension in order to retain the existing approvals. Hopefully they will start construction later this year or early next year.”

“I have no problem with the two year extension,” commented Councilwoman Pam Stafford. “But will it mean that this process will speed up a little bit?”

Weisbrod assured the council that they would begin construction as soon as it was approved.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Councilmember Jake Mackenzie, noting that this plan had been in the works for nearly a decade before it came to council in 2012.
