|Johnson gets win No. 200
Rancho Cotate softball coach Dave Johnson has reached a milestone in his career.
When his Cougars defeated Montgomery 4-1 on April 3, it was his 200th victory as coach for Rancho Cotate. And it was a freshman who led his team.
Brittney Scardina not only pitched an outstanding softball game against Montgomery, she also helped her own cause by driving in three of the Cougars’ runs in their NBL win over the Vikings in Rohnert Park.
The victory marked the 200th win Johnson, who was treated to a cake celebration following the win.
Scardina was one of four Cougars to rap out two hits. The others were Jordan Ladner, Kristine Riccosa and Taylor Del Santo. Scardina pitched a complete game and allowed three hits, struck out two and she walked one. She gave up an earned run in the top of the fifth.
Maria Carrillo 5, Rancho Cotate 4
The Cougars were unable to hang on to a 4-2 lead as the Pumas rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on Monday in Santa Rosa. It marked Rancho Cotate’s first loss of the season.
Rancho Cotate did its damage in the first and third innings, scoring two runs in each frame. After the third, Maria Carrillo pitcher Robin Johnson dominated. In the final four innings, the Cougars got only one hit. The Cougars got run-scoring singles from Carolina Camacho and Janaea Mason in the first inning. In the third, Del Santo blasted two-run double.
Cardinal Newman 3, Rancho Cotate 1
The Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and claim the NBL victory.
Rancho Cotate got solid games from Reilani Peleti (3 for 3 at the plate with double) and Del Santo, who was 2 for 3 with a double. Scardina took the pitching loss for Rancho Cotate. She allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out two.
The Cougars are now 8-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the NBL.
