Laxmi G. Tewari coming to GMC April 19

North Indian vocalist Laxmi G. Tewari will perform Indian ragas and devotional songs at 7:30 p.m. on April 19 at the Green Music Center’s Weill Hall on the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park.

His accompanists will include: Vivek Datar, harmonium; Ravi Gutala, tabla; and Rami Ziadeh, tambura. 

Pandit Tewari, who has taught ethnomusicology at SSU since 1974, is a recognized scholar and performer who has done extensive fieldwork in India, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Fiji, Ghana and Zimbabwe. 

His most recent book, “Music of the Indian Diaspora in Trinidad,” chronicles the oral traditions of the descendants of indentured Indian laborers in Trinidad.
