|Guerrero ousted from state after opening day
Rancho Cotate High’s Brian Guerrero was eliminated from the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championships on Friday after a 3-0 second-round loss to Del Oro High junior Jansen Engelbrecth.
The 120-pound wrestler dropped his opening match of the double-elimination tournament 7-0 to Carlos Anaya of North Monterey County High. Guerrero, a two-time state qualifier, finishes this season at 25-6 and his career record is 107-34.
Guerrero was the lone representative at the state championships for Rancho Cotate. He qualified by placing third at last week’s North Coast Section tournament. Anaya won the Central Coast Section championship last weekend, and Engelbrecht was fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section.
Clovis High, of the Central Section, won an unprecedented fourth consecutive team title and wound up with 197.5 team points. Crosstown rival Clovis West was a distant second with 118.5 points.
