Individually, Rancho Cotate High’s Ryan Sousa closed out his basketball career with a strong performance by scoring 16 points in the Cougars’ season-ending 62-38 loss to Maria Carrillo on Feb. 14 in Santa Rosa.

The Cougars finished the season 4-22 overall and 0-14 in the North Bay League.

The final game of the season pretty much mirrored just about all the games for the Cougars this season. After keeping the game close early – they trailed 16-9 at the end of the first quarter – the Cougars’ lack of depth because of injuries struck again. They were outscored 33-10 in the span of the second and third quarters and trailed 49-19 heading into the fourth.

Rancho Cotate doubled Maria Carrillo’s offensive output in the fourth quarter 16-8.

Junior Jake Howard and sophomore Gunner Mefferd each pulled down four rebounds for the Cougars.

Maria Carrillo improved to 18-8 overall and 10-4 overall to finish tied for second with Cardinal Newman in the NBL. Santa Rosa’s Montgomery won the regular-season league title with a 13-1 mark.
