|Rancho Cotate grapplers take down Gauchos 37-30
By winning seven of the 13 matches that were not decided by forfeit, host Rancho Cotate High’s boys’ wrestling team was able to outlast Casa Grande of Petaluma 37-30 on Feb. 5.
The Cougars also benefited from decisive victories that delivered more than the typical three points for a conventional victory. Brian Guerrero, the Cougars’ 132-pounder, gave his team five points because of a technical fall (a victory by 15 or more points) over Matthew Beck. Daniel Lincoln (126 pounds) and Isaiah Barragan (170) each scored six team points for the Cougars with pins of Ryan Mishler and Joshua Black, respectively. Lincoln needed only 1 minute, 23 seconds for his pin, while Barragan went 5:51 before recording his pin.
Joseph Street (138) and Colton Oba (182) each had four-point majority decisions for the Cougars over Anson Morales and Michael Voight.
Craig Zschach (106) and Dennis Adams (160) also had three-point wins for the Cougars. Zschach defeated Julian Majano 7-1, and Adams was a 11-4 victor over Roemer Santos.
In the girls’ match, there were only two matches decided on the mat. The Cougars, with the help of forfeits and double forfeits, were 48-23 winners.
The Cougars’ Olivia Barnett (160) pinned the Gauchos’ Patricia None in 46 seconds. Casa Grande’s Erika Mihalca beat the Cougars’ Anareli Alonso 23-7.
The Cougars will spend this weekend prepping for the North Bay League Wrestling Championships, scheduled for Feb. 22 at Windsor High School. The top three qualifiers will advance to the North Coast Section Wrestling Championships at Newark Memorial High on Feb 28-March 1. Both tournaments begin at 9 a.m.
