Vikings, Newman subdue RC girls

Rancho Cotate High’s girls’ basketball team gave Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa a run for its money on Tuesday, Feb. 4, but eventually succumbed to the second-place team in the North Bay League 61-50.

Three players scored in double figures for the Cougars, led by Tilar Stanford with 18 points, followed by Reilani Peleti and Nicole Guerrero added 14 and 11, respectively.

Rancho Cotate trailed by seven at halftime, but the Cardinals managed to stretch the lead to 11 by halftime, and the two teams played to a standstill in the fourth quarter.

After playing a spirited first half, where they were down 23-21, the Cougars ran out of steam as the Vikings pulled away. Montgomery of Santa Rosa outpointed the Cougars 20-11 in the third quarter and 18-7 in the fourth for the final margin.

Nina Nicolis and Guerrero were the top scorers for Rancho Cotate with 10 and eight points, respectively.

The Cougars are now 7-14 overall and 0-9 in the NBL. Rancho Cotate plays its final road game tonight in Petaluma against Casa Grande. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. 

The Cougars play their final two games at home on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. against Ukiah and Feb. 13 against Maria Carrillo. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
