Defense and the trio of Nicole Guerrero, Reilani Peleti and Tilar Stanford were more than enough for Rancho Cotate High’s girls’ basketball team to overwhelm Piner, 66-36 in the fifth annual Martin Luther King Day Challenge at Sonoma on Jan. 20.

The MLK Challenge pits teams from the North Bay League against teams from the Sonoma County League. The Cougars now stand at 7-10 overall and 0-5 in the NBL. Piner is its second season in the SCL. On Jan. 18, the Cougars absorbed a 54-34 loss at home against Petaluma’s Casa Grande.

Rancho Cotate’s next game is tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Santa Rosa against Maria Carrillo. Tuesday, the Cougars play host to Windsor at 7:30 p.m.

Piner actually outscored the Cougars in the second half, but the game had long since been decided.
