A high-speed chase that ended on the outskirts of Rohnert Park resulted in a man being taken to a hospital before being arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail.

According to a report released by the Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety, Officers Chris Medina and Rick Bates were patrolling on Dowdell at Golf Course Drive West when they noticed a black Saturn SUV driving east on Golf Course at a high rate of speed. The officers turned out to follow the SUV after it passed and watched it get into the left turn lane to go northbound on Redwood Drive.

The RPDPS report said there was a vehicle waiting in the turn lane ahead of the driver of the Saturn SUV, later identified as 42-year-old Erik Terko of Nevada City, Ca. Terko, the report said, suddenly turned out from behind the car, ran the red light when making the turn on Redwood and then sped off northbound at a high rate of speed. The officers activated their emergency lights and pursued.

Terko, the report said, continued to accelerate at even higher speeds northbound on Redwood until the street turned into Millbrae in unincorporated Sonoma County. RPDPS estimated Terko got up to at least 75 mph when it ran off the narrow roadway and into a ditch between Langner and Whistler avenues. His SUV rolled several times and knocked over a power pole while going through a fence. The owner of the property had to be contacted because there was the chance some of his livestock could have wandered into the road.

Power lines were knocked onto the roadway, resulting in the loss of power for residences in the area. Terko’s vehicle came to rest on the passenger side in the ditch and field. Terko, the only occupant in the vehicle, crawled out of the busted rear window and was taken into custody.

He had some scrapes on him and showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

After the SUV was pulled out of the ditch, a little more than three pounds of marijuana were found inside.

Terko told RPDPS officers he had just left the Graton Resort and Casino, where he had been drinking alcohol. He said he tried to flee from the officers because he had a “small amount of marijuana” in his car.
