A Cotati native’s winter break from the cold of Chicago turned tragic on Sunday, Jan. 12, when she died from a fall off a seaside cliff in San Diego.

Anna Bachman, 25, who was to turn 26 on Thursday, Jan. 16, was in San Diego visiting her sister Gail, 29 when the accident occurred. The sisters have been described as extremely close and Anna was really looking forward to her visit.

“So excited,” Anna Bachman wrote on her sister’s Facebook page. “Especially to get some sun on that pale face.”

She posing for pictures taken by her sister at 5:19 p.m. when she edged too close to the cliff at the south end of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.

San Diego Police said Anna fell 40 to 50 feet. Bystanders tried to revive Bachman but paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene, according to a press release by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“All indications are this was just a terrible, tragic accident,” San Diego Police Lt. Paul Phillips said.

She was scheduled to return to classes at the University of Illinois in Chicago on Monday, where she was scheduled to complete a master’s degree in urban planning and policy program in June.

Bachman graduated from Rancho Cotate High in 2006 and earned a degree from UC Berkeley in urban planning. While at Rancho Cotate High, Bachman worked on Hurricane Katrina relief effort, a holiday canned food drive and a blood drive.

She is survived by her father, Richard Bachman, of Vallejo; her mother and stepfather Marsha and Andrew Kopral of Cotati; and her sister Gail.

A memorial service will be held in Cotati at a date to be determined, he said.
