Cougars rack up third consecutive basketball victory

After opening the season with four consecutive losses, Rancho Cotate High’s varsity boys’ basketball team seems to have found its footing as it has won its last three games to improve to 3-4 overall.

The Cougars’ latest victory came on Tuesday night when they rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to overtake Petaluma for a 52-48 victory on the road.

Moziah Ward was the Cougars’ top scorer with 16 points. He also had four steals. 

All of Alec Wong’s 15 points came from beyond the 3-point line as he drained five on the night, and Anthony Matteri added 11 points. Also, sophomore Gunner Mefferd pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the Cougars.

Nick Tuttle and Matteri powered the Cougars’ effort on Monday night with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Matteri was particularly effective shooting from the outside as he dropped in four 3-pointers. Ward also reached double figures with 12 points.

This was a game where the Cougars simply dominated the boards with 41 rebounds. Rancho Cotate raced out to a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and gradually increased its lead in the second and third periods. Theyled by 15 at halftime.

Rancho Cotate is at home tonight (Dec. 20) at 7 p.m. against Napa and Saturday (Dec. 21) against Livermore at 7:30 p.m.
