Gamblers heading to the Graton Resort & Casino in Rohnert Park may want to find other ways to occupy their time for a couple hours because, as of 10:50 a.m., the brand new gambling facility has closed after reaching maximum capacity.

Throngs of people ready to gamble began gathering outside the casino early in the morning. Buses also dropped off patrons hours before the official scheduled opening. General manager Joe Hasson said he exepcted between 5,000-6,000 people inside the casino at one time.

The casino doors opened an hour earlier than its planned 10 a.m. scheduled time. Less than two hours later, the casino had reached capacity. The casino was expected to draw as many as 10,000 people, and there were expected to be just as many additional cars on the local roads today.

The main roadways leading into the casino, especially northbound Highway 101, were at a standstill. The intersection of Commerce Boulevard and Golf Course Drive also was snarled by heavy traffic.

CHP officers and members of the Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety also were on foot controlling traffic.
