|Woman jailed for felony child endangerment
Officers from the Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety arrested a Santa Rosa woman for felony child endangerment Sunday morning, Nov. 3, at a motel on Commerce Boulevard.
According to a RPDPS report, officers assigned to a fire engine arrived at Motel 6 to give diapers to the mother and father of two children aged 1 and 3. The woman taken into custody was 33-year-old Kendra Smith.
One of the officers had personally purchased the supplies to help the struggling family. Upon their arrival, the 3-year-old child answered the door of the motel room and said the mother was not there. The 1-year-old was also left unattended in the motel room. The father is currently in jail on an unrelated matter.
Because of Rohnert Park’s public safety model, the officers assigned to the fire engine are also active sworn police officers who immediately began to investigate. They searched the motel room for the mother and she was not found. There was no adult supervision provided for the children.
Officers also found several drug paraphernalia items, controlled substances and weapons, which were accessible to the children.
As the RPDPS officers were continuing their investigation, Smith returned to the room, where she was arrested for felony child endangerment and booked in the Sonoma County Jail, where she remained in custody as of Nov. 4. Smith’s bail was set at $25,000. She was to be arraigned in Sonoma County Superior Court on Nov. 5. The children were taken into protective custody.
