The Rohnert Park Community Band is providing anyone wishing to play music the chance to do so.

The band, under the direction of Gary Young, recently started rehearsals for the 2013-14 concert season would like to welcome new members.

Anyone interested should go to rehearsals at the Burton Avenue Recreation Center on Monday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. The band does not hold auditions. It’s a case of simply bringing an instrument and “can you sight read music?”

The band was founded in 1979 by Gary Mathews, who brought together a small group of musician friends with the plan to start a community band that would play at local and regional activities and give concerts in halls, auditoriums and public parks as well as shopping centers, the Santa Rosa Mall and McDonald’s in RP.

Over the years, the band has grown from a starting group of 12 members to 20 in 1989 and more than 50 today. It plays a variety of music, from marches and show tunes to theme songs of famous movies to classic pieces.

Although the band is based in Rohnert Park, there are members from Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sebastopol and Cotati. The youngest member is in the fifth grade, while the oldest member is 75 years old.

The band will next play at the Veteran’s Day remembrance “Avenue of Flags” on Nov. 11. The band will begin playing at 10:30 a.m., and the ceremony starts at 11 a.m. This event at the RP Community Center is free.

Also, the Holiday Concert is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Community Center. Tickets for this concert are $5 and are available from band members or at the door. Children under 18 will be admitted free.

The Community Center is located at 5401 Snyder Lane in RP.
