Lace up your dindels and lederhosen and dust off your steins, because the seventh annual Cotati Oktoberfest will be starting the weekend off with beer, bratwurst and polka music on Saturday, Oct. 12, at La Plaza Park.

Admission is free, but for 15 dollars everyone can enjoy a bratwurst with German-style potatoes, sauerkraut and a pint of Lagunitas beer in a Cotati Oktoberfest stein.

“We are trying to accommodate everyone,” says Cotati Chamber of Commerce member Suzanne Whipple. “There will also be vegetarian brats and root beer.”

The idea began seven years ago in the mind of Sally’s Tomatoes owner Gerard Giudice and has been a success every year so far, becoming yet another La Plaza Park tradition along with the Cotati Accordion Festival, the annual Kids Day celebration and the Christmas tree lighting in December.

For entertainment, Karl Lebherz will be on stage with his band playing the accordion and traditional polka music for those brave enough for the dance floor. Throughout the day there will be contests with cash prizes. At 2 p.m. one can enter their dachshund in the Weiner Races, sponsored by Northbay Brewery Tours.

At 3 p.m., men will line up for the tankard hoist sponsored by Spanky’s Bar, and at 4 p.m., women can participate in the stein races, sponsored by Friar Tuck’s Pub.

Contest entry is free with the chance of a $50 dollar prize, and traditional costumes are encouraged.

Find your inner-German and enjoy a day in the park with food, beer and music to kick off the autumn season.
