The University Art Gallery at Sonoma State University will host the exhibition “25 Years, 25 Artists: The Painting Students of Mark Perlman,” which opens with a reception for the artists from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 and remains on view through Sunday, Oct. 13.

The exhibition, which is being presented in conjunction with Perlman’s forthcoming retirement after 25 years on SSU’s Art Department faculty, honors his achievements as a teacher and mentor through the work of 25 of his most skillful, original and committed students.

Spanning virtually all 25 of his years at SSU – beginning in 1988 – the former students in the exhibition, according to Perlman, “are 25 different artists who developed a body of work and believed in their own capabilities at the time to find themselves a part of our short history together. They come from very different backgrounds and experiences and showed a true sincerity in the intent of their paintings.”

The participating artists include Annie Berryman, Ryan Butler, Danielle Caldwell, Cathy Ellis, Nick Gagliardi, Natalie Garoian, Jen Garrido, Alisa Gierloff, Amy Hoeck, Mike Koftinow, Machiko Kondo, Andrew Merriss, Mozhgan Mostafavi, Matt Mullins, Josh Nemec, Heather Patterson, James Phegan, Susan Preston, Frank Ryan, Mary Sanders, Halle Siepman, Sheila Ticen, Alma J. Valverde C., Geirrod VanDyke, and Annie Watson.

University Art Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and weekends from noon-4 p.m.

The gallery is closed Mondays and holidays.
