|Landman, Thompson to co-host meeting
Cotati town hall event scheduled for Sept. 3
Cotati Mayor Mark Landman and U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D, Napa, will share the stage and microphone on Tuesday, Sept. 3, for a town hall meeting in the Cotati Room from 6-7:30 p.m.
This will be the second time Landman has faced the public in an open-forum format, while it will be the only town hall meeting for Thompson during this congressional recess. Landman in April hosted “An Evening With the Mayor” in April at the Redwood Café in Cotati and had promised to do another before the year was out.
Thompson and his representatives expressed some interest in a joint forum and was extended the invitation by Landman. Thompson, during the last congressional recess, had done a number of town meetings throughout his district.
“We’re going to sit down and each speak for a few minutes and then open it up to questions from the audience,” Landman said. “I’m pretty certain Rep. Thompson will handle the national questions, I’ll take the local questions and as for the regional questions, we’ll see who wants to take a swing at it.”
It is likely some in the audience will want to question Thompson on his role as chairman of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He’s also likely to be questioned about the controversy surrounding National Security Agency surveillance tactics.
Landman sees this meeting as an opportunity for both constituents and elected officials to get to know each other better.
“It’s really important, whether you’re a congressman or on the city council, to learn what your constituents are thinking,” Landman said. “Sometimes, you don’t get a chance to hear from a lot of folks. And events like this brings out new people who might not have a chance to attend a city council meeting. This is a chance to inform people. Sometimes, issues can be reduced to one or two sentences, and others take more discussion. It’s an opportunity for there to be an increase in communication, and I’m looking forward to that.”
