RPís 9-under stars go 2-0 to start regionals

Rohnert Park’s 9-under Cal Ripken All-Stars pushed their record to 2-0 in the Pacific Southwest Regional tournament by downing Scottsdale, Ariz., 9-7, on July 23, the second day of pool play.

The Rohnert Park squad opened the tournament by blanking host Riverton, Utah, 9-0, on Monday, July 22. The tournament is being held in Midvale, Utah. Rohnert Park finished off pool play on Wednesday, July 24. Details of that game can be found at www.thecommunityvoice.com.

Russell Freedheim, who went 3 for 3 at the plate and was the starting pitcher, was named the most valuable player for the first game. He threw 31 strikes in 37 pitches over the first two innings. Also contributing to the offense were Adam Hickman, Tanner Starrett, Elijah Stevenson, Carson Crawford, Jack Bandy, Ryan Kane, Cameron Duran, Brody Smith, Jake McCoy and Michael O’Daniel.

Crawford was chosen MVP against Scottsdale. He gave up just one hit in three innings pitched and had a base hit.

RP 12-under falls twice

The Rohnert Park 12-under Cal Ripken All-Stars have struggled in their Pacific Southwest Regional tournament in Surprise, Ariz., having lost their first two games in pool play.

In the opener on July 22, Rohnert Park was beaten by Firebaugh, which is 60 miles west of Fresno, 9-4. The following day, Rohnert Park was unable to push a run across the plate in a 9-0 loss to powerful Hawaii. Colton Moss was 3 for 5 for Rohnert Park, while Justin Thomas rapped out a pair of singles.

Hawaii opened the tournament by defeating host Surprise by a whopping score of 53-0.
