Sebastopol artist Sandy Eastoak will read from her new book, “Twenty-six Companions: Celtic, Buddhist & Native Spirit Guides,” on Friday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Many Rivers Books in Sebastopol.

The book is based on combining an art project and meditation practice, and offering practice suggestions for a life of intimacy with spirit.

Several years ago, Eastoak began a project of making a linoleum block print of a goddess, god or saint every two weeks for a year. Each two weeks included intensive meditation on the great being pictured in her print.

When people began buying the original prints and talking with the artist, many urged her to write a book about her extraordinary experiences.

The 26 spirit guides she presents come from many traditions and include Jesus, Bear Woman, Buddha, Cernunnos (the Green Man), Tara, Saint Francis, Corn Maiden, Sitting Bull, and Thich Nhat Hanh.

Besides honoring the unity of many faith traditions, Eastoak’s book reveals ecological protection as vital to every spiritual discipline.

Eastoak says her main purpose is to “empower others to explore spiritual intimacy and trust their own experience.” Zen teacher Daniel Terragno calls the book “an inspiring exposition and reminder of our interconnectedness throughout the different cultural and traditional archetypes we meet.”

Jim Wilson, of Many Rivers Books, says, “Her book is an antidote to the mechanistic view of existence which seems to have become the fallback position for our culture. Her book is good medicine.”

The book is available at Many Rivers Books, Sebastopol Gallery, and through Amazon. Bookstores can order it through Ingram.
