Sonoma County’s only national barbeque competition, will serve as a fundraiser for the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County.

The museum, for the second year in a row, will be the beneficiary of the Wine Country Big Q, which takes place on Saturday, July 13 from 1-5 p.m. at Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa.

The Wine Country Big Q is a Kansas City barbecue nationally sanctioned competition featuring some of the best pit masters from around the country. In addition to authentic barbecued meats, the event offers world-class wines, award-winning brews and great country and blues music. This year, Pete Stringfellow follows opening act, Paulies Garage. There also will be a wide array of hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities provided by the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County’s Museum-on-the-Go.

Adult admission is $45 for more than a pound of award-winning barbecue, beans and dessert, wine and beer tasting, live entertainment and giveaways. Youth tickets are $20 each and include access to the kid’s area, including the Museum-on-the-Go. Sonoma Academy is located at 2500 Farmers Lane in Santa Rosa (off Kawana Springs Road). Go to www.winecountrybigq.com for more information.

Slated to open doors to the public permanently early 2014, the Children’s Museum has been operating primarily as a Museum-on-the-Go since 2005. Last year alone, the Museum-on-the-Go serviced approximately 15,000 children and caregivers at 64 school, community and private events. Once open with regular hours, the Children’s Museum is expected to serve more than 50,000 visitors annually.
