It’s shaping up to be another busy summer for La Plaza Park in Cotati.

The park, one of the city’s best assets, again will be host to a number of family-oriented events. On June 1, the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life relay was held in the park.

In years past, the annual Cotati Accordion Festival has been the biggest draw for La Plaza Park. This year, however, Cotati’s 50th anniversary celebration may give the CAF a run for its money. The 50th anniversary celebration will be held in conjunction with the annual and popular Kids Day Parade on July 13.

The day will start with a free pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Church of the Oaks, and the 21st Kids Day Parade will start at 10 a.m., heading through downtown ending at La Plaza Park, where contests, games, a deejay and more will keep the fun going for kids until around 1 p.m. That’s when the event will transition into the anniversary party that features a history walk, food, wine and live music.

The celebration is being organized by a committee comprised of business owners, Chamber of Commerce members and the Cotati Historical Society. Councilmember Susan Harvey and Vice Mayor John Dell’Osso are also on the committee and serve as liaisons between the committee and city staff. The committee expects to raise an additional $25,000. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should contact jdellosso@ci.cotati.ca.us or sharvey@ci.cotati.ca.us.

Details about the event can be found at www.cotatis50th.com.

Before the anniversary and Kids Day, however, La Plaza Park also will be the focal point for the Cotati Jazz Festival on June 16.

Every Thursday, through Aug. 29, the weekly Farmers Market will be held in the park from 2:30-9 p.m.

The Cotati Accordion Festival is scheduled for Aug. 17-18. Also, Oktoberfest, another annual event, will take place in the park on Oct. 12.
