|Wilfred Avenue upgrade begins
Road closed from Redwood Dr. to Stony Point Road through at least November
Drivers may have already felt the impact of the City of Rohnert Park’s decision to award the contract to widen Wilfred Avenue from Redwood Drive to Stony Point Road to DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin.
DeSilva Gates Construction came in with the low bid of $10,845,757 and already has started doing work on the widening project. The contractor started work on Monday, June 3, and is expected to complete the project in November, right before the opening of the Graton Rancheria Casino.
From now through its completion date, Wilfred Avenue will be closed from Redwood Drive in Rohnert Park to Stony Point Road in Sonoma County. A detour will be posted to use Rohnert Park Expressway. Access to Wilfred Avenue and side streets, while under construction, will be limited to residents, property owners and public/emergency services.
The Rohnert Park City Council authorized acquisition of property needed for the safety-improving-widening project earlier this year. RP was able to obtain 21 of the 22 easements needed for the widening voluntarily from property owners. The acquisition of one small easement is the only imminent domain case pending, and it is not needed to begin construction, the City of Rohnert Park said in a press release.
The widening of Wilfred Avenue is called for in the City of Rohnert Park and Sonoma County general plans. The City of Rohnert Park entered into a Joint Exercise of Powers Agreement (JEPA) with Sonoma County representatives and the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria to facilitate the road widening and related improvements. The project will mitigate traffic impacts of the proposed development and will implement city and county General Plan transportation elements. Graton Rancheria is footing the bill for this project.
The Project will widen Wilfred Avenue to four traffic lanes from Redwood Drive to Langner Avenue and two traffic lanes from Langner Avenue to Stony Point Road. Widening will also provide for shoulders with bicycle lanes on both sides and repaving the entire roadway. A new bike bridge will be constructed across the Bellevue/Wilfred Channel on the south side of the existing bridge. Between Redwood Drive and Langner Avenue, a sidewalk will be constructed on the south side, and utilities will be placed underground. There will be dedicated turn lanes at key intersections. There will be new traffic signals at Dowdell Avenue, Labath Avenue, and Stony Point Road. The signal at Redwood Drive will be modified.
