Fronda sparks rally to lift Cougars past Cardinal Newman
Keilani Fronda saved Rancho Cotate High’s softball team from the brink of its first North Bay League loss with a little bit of power and a lot of hustle.
Fronda belted a run-scoring double in the bottom of the seventh and final inning and then scored from second on a groundout to lift the Cougars to a 7-6 victory over Cardinal Newman on April 9 at Rancho Cotate High. Rancho Cotate improved to 6-4 overall, but more importantly, it is 3-0 in the NBL. Cardinal Newman is 8-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Cougars seemingly had control of the game, scoring twice in the first inning and once in the second, third and fifth frames for a 5-1 lead. The Cardinals then rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-5 lead.
This was a contest dominated by the play of the youth on both sides. For the Cougars, freshman Katie Rohrer blasted a solo home run, while freshman designated hitter Vickie Espinoza had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and she added three RBI. Sophomore Kazja Fa’agata-Averbuck added a pair of hits and an RBI to the Cougars’ cause.
Fa’agata-Averbuck also was the starting pitcher, but reliever Becca LaFrancois was the winning pitcher. Neither hurler allowed the Cardinals an extra-base hit.
The Cougars’ next game is April 16 at Santa Rosa High. They’ll be at home on April 18 against Windsor. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Rancho Cotate traveled to Petaluma on April 11 for a contest with Casa Grande. Details of that game were unavailable when The Community Voice went to print.
