North Bay Rattlers open season on Saturday

Believe it or not, it's football season. Wait a second...didn't football season just end last month? You mean it's spring training, and the orange and black (San Francisco Giants) are back. Right?

The orange and black are back, but it's not the Giants, it's the North Bay Rattlers, Rohnert Park's defending minor league national champion football team. That's right...the Rattlers open their season on Saturday, March 23, with a 3 p.m. game against the West Coast Lions at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Rancho Cotate High School.

The Rattlers on March 12 received a proclamation from RP Mayor Pam Stafford in recognition of their 14-0 season in 2012, which included the national championship (their seventh overall and second in the past three years). The Rattlers, coached by Jim Curoso, consists of former Rancho Cotate players and other high school players from Sonoma County.

Along with the concession stand, there will be raffle prizes and entertainment by the Rattlers' cheerleading squad. For more information, go to

The Rancho Cotate High School campus is located at 5450 Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park.
