SRJC to host Cuban Film and Music Festival

Santa Rosa Junior College hosts a Cuban Film and Music Festival from March 27-30. Events will be held at both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. 

A fundraising dinner and concert, benefitting the Concern for Las Cruces Clinic in Guatemala and prepared under the guidance of Cuban-born SRJC instructor Orlando Raola, will also be held on Saturday, March 30, from 6-8 p.m. at Worth Our Weight, 1021 Hahman Drive in Santa Rosa. Tickets for the fundraiser are $45.

Featured films will be “Cuba’s Literacy Brigade: Women on the Frontlines of Transforming a Nation,” on March 27, at noon in Newman Auditorium in Santa Rosa; “Lucia,” spotlighting three generations of women, on March 28, at 6:30 p.m. in Newman Auditorium; and “Sons of Cuba,” a look at aspiring boxers, on March 27, at 7 p.m. in the Carole Ellis Auditorium in Petaluma. “Sons of Cuba” has a general admission fee of $5 or $4 for SRJC students.

Music events will feature Grammy-nominated composer Rebeca Mauleon lecturing on Cuban music on March 29, at 12:30 p.m. in Forsyth Hall, Room 105, in Santa Rosa. Mauleon will also give a master class on Cuban rhythm that same day at 2 p.m. in the same location, and will conclude with an Afro-Cuban Jazz Concert at 8:30 p.m. in the Carole Ellis Auditorium in Petaluma. 

Cuban native Carlitos Medrano and his quartet will perform salsa and jazz at the March 30 fundraising dinner and at 8:30 p.m. in the Bertolini Student Activities Center on the Santa Rosa Campus.
