|Courchaine, Luque share MVP
It’s rare when a league names three players as co-Most Valuable Players.
It’s even rarer when two of the three come from the same team. But that’s what happened as running back Jalon Luque and quarterback Michael Courchaine, both seniors, were named co-MVPs of the North Bay League along with Cardinal Newman linebacker/wide receiver Phil Wright.
Luque and Courchaine were among seven Cougars to earn top NBL honors.
Seniors A.J. Davison and Nick Reynolds were named co-Linemen of the Year, along with Cardinal Newman’s Nolan Sheahan, while Cougars senior kicker Rodrigo Perez was named Specialist of the Year.
Senior linebacker Fono Misi was named the NBL’s Defensive MVP.
Head coach Ed Conroy, who guided the Cougars through an unbeaten regular season and into the North Coast Section Div. II title game, shared Coach of the Year honors with Montgomery’s Ed Franchi.
Five Cougars landed on the All-NBL first team offense, including senior receivers Carlos Soto and Thomas Sory, tight end Mike Ruiz, senior offensive lineman Tyler Rosentreter and junior offensive lineman Steven De Souza.
Rancho Cotate’s defense, which proved to be the strength of the team, also placed five on the All-NBL team, including freshman cornerback Chris Taylor-Yamanoha, senior cornerback Josh Belda, senior defensive end Tyler Mitchell, senior linebacker Ty Brantley and safety Soto.
Junior running back Tanoa Peleti landed on the second-team offense team, as did Taylor-Yamanoha as a receiver. Peleti also was a second-team selection at linebacker, while De Souza was a second-team defensive lineman.
