Officers of the Rohnert Park Dept. of Public Safety braved brutal weather conditions on Friday, Dec. 21, to conduct a DUI and drivers license checkpoint ,which resulted in a number of arrests and citations.
The checkpoint was held between 7 p.m. Dec. 21 and 2 a.m. Dec. 22 in the eastbound lanes of Rohnert Park Expressway near State Farm Drive.
The RPDPS said 1,627 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.
Of the vehicles through the checkpoint, 1,469 were screened by officers for signs of DUI and license checks.
A total of 52 drivers were directed into a nearby parking area for further contact with officers for either DUI evaluation or driver’s license checks.
Of the drivers directed off the line for further evaluation, officers arrested and cited 16 drivers.
Of those arrested, one driver was arrested for DUI, one was for driving with a suspended license, and 14 were for driving without a license. One vehicle was towed.
Five who were arrested or cited were from Rohnert Park, and the rest were from outside the RP, Cotati and Penngrove areas.
In addition to the arrests, five other drivers were issued citations for other vehicle code infractions such as, driving on a permit with no licensed driver, possession of marijuana in a vehicle, driving without headlights, provisional licensee driving outside of terms.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don’t heed the message to designate a sober driver.
