McGrath’s Performing Arts Academy will present Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” at Sonoma State Ives 101. Tickets are $8 a seat and performances take place on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m., Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 1 p.m.
In a magical kingdom fathoms below, beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with evil sea witch Ursula and convince Prince Eric she’s the girl with the enchanting voice.
Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production, Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. features the hit songs "Part of Your World," "She’s in Love," and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea."
With a 10-year-old Princess Ariel and a 9-year-old Prince Eric, this 75-minute show will be nothing short of extraordinary. With a cast of 16 students playing the parts of what should be 26 cast members, it can get challenging, “but the kids thrive on these obstacles, and it is only pushing them to take their roles to greater heights,” director Ashley Kimball said.
Each cast member plays at least two different roles, which makes working backstage interesting.
Kimball says, “There are so many costume changes. There is never a dull moment behind the scenes because everyone is working on getting into their next character.”
While the average show meets at least 3-4 times a week for rehearsal, Little Mermaid Jr. only meets once a week, every Saturday.
Tickets are can be purchased at the Sonoma State Student Union Box Office or at McGrath’s Performing Arts Academy.
