RP council approves minor changes to garbage contract

Rohnert Park’s City Council made a minor change to its franchise agreement with RP Disposal, aka, the garbage company, to handle all rate-setting and billing functions to its customers. It’s a minor adjustment to conform to a new contract recently signed, and the five-member council had little to say about it. The change goes into effect January 2013.

“The city will no longer play a role in rate-setting for the refuse services and will solely regulate the maximum charges,” said Finance Director Cathy Orme.

The council also approved minor alterations to the obligations of residents to receive or not to receive weekly garbage pickup services. Orme said the city’s Municipal Code “is not clear” about this and noted the proposed amendments would “clarify” the garbage, and yard waste pickups are “voluntary and not required of any property within the city.”

This would require getting a permit from the city’s Public Works Dept. to allow self-hauling, if the homeowner or occupant doesn’t already have one. Any vehicle used, pickup truck or two-wheeled trailer, would have to be licensed and a cover for the refuse if it’s in an open truck or trailer.
