The third annual Mutt Strut, hosted by the Animal Shelter League of Rohnert Park, proved to be even bigger than last year’s successful event.

The one-mile family-oriented dog walkathon and pet fair took place on Sept. 29 at the RP Community Center.

This was a fundraising event to raise much needed funds for the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter. According to Mickey Zeldes, supervistor at the shelter, this year’s Mutt Strut brought in close to $14,000, nearly doubling last year’s total.

The Mutt Strut is also part of the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day. AKC put on a rally demonstration in the morning and, along with many other dog-related vendors, operated a vending booth.

First, in celebration of International Animal Day, the activities commenced with a non-denominational “Blessing of the Animals” led by Kathy Sidjakov, minister at the Gateway Christian Church.

The fun continued all day with demonstrations, contests and shopping at pet vendor booths and animal care specialists who gave tips to dog owners about bite prevention, training, socializing dogs properly and overall advice on how to be a responsible pet owner..
There was a best friend pet contest for kids of all ages, and the kids proudly showed off their furry best friend and what made them so special. There was also a best-trick contest, and best costume. Everyone was a winner and each dog received a trophy as well as a goody bag full of fun dog treats. The event was emceed by Froggy 92.9 personalities, who were front and center with the contest participants.

The event was a success by raising much needed money and bringing community awareness to the homeless dog population that has been steadily increasing during these economic times.

The most important lessons taken from the day were to be responsible dog owners by having dogs spayed or neutered and for those considering adding a furry canine to the family to check out all shelters before deciding on the perfect pet.

Way to go, Laurel! I love the way Phantom is looking at you...that's lovely. You both look as though you are having fun, and what a great event.
