Walgreens drugstore franchise has plans to open a new location in Rohnert Park. The company sought approval for a use permit, site plan and architectural review from the RP Planning Commission last Thursday night.

The commission voted 3-0 in favor of it. Members Susan Haydon and John Borba were absent.

Its location would be in the Sonoma Gateway Center behind Jack in the Box fast food restaurant on the northwest corner where RP Expressway intersects with Commerce Blvd. It has two buildings in an L-shaped design. Both are virtually empty except for a cell-phone distributor, as the economic recession forced restaurants in the center to close down. However, a Starbucks coffee shop is currently under construction nearby on Commerce Blvd.

Walgreens’ plans call for a 13,650 sq. ft. store with a drive-thru pharmacy window on the south side of the center. All the shop locations in this building are vacant. Building and Planning Manager Marilyn Ponton noted, “The Sonoma Gateway Center has never had a major tenant to anchor the center. It will act as an incentive for other commercial tenants to move here.” She recommended approval of the project.

Walgreens has a thriving drugstore in Cotati near Peets Coffee Shop on Old Redwood Highway. Diane Thompson, Cotati city manager, said she has heard nothing about changes in this location aside from interior redesigns.
