A Rohnert Park man is facing the possibility of spending nearly a decade in jail as the result of being charged with four felonies after allegedly hitting a professional bicycle rider on June 29 outside Healdsburg.

Arthur Ben Yu, 36, has been charged with hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving with injury, auto theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, which belonged to his father.

Also, he was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license. A fifth felony charge – for drunken driving – could be forthcoming following an investigation.

Yu allegedly hit New Zealand professional bicyclist Michael Torckler, 25, on Pine Flat Road northeast of Healdsburg. According to the California Highway Patrol, Torckler was traveling downhill, while Yu was going uphill in a 1996 Honda Accord.

Yu, the CHP said, swerved into the lane when on a curve and collided with Torckler. The passenger riding with Yu got out to assist Torckler, but Yu abandoned the scene. His roommate alerted law enforcement officials Yu was at home, where he was arrested on June 30.
